UNM Continuing Education invites you to learn about American History through film. Each film/topic will have its own PowerPint presentation to present information about the period, the film and the director. The series is set up chronologically in terms of the time periods depicted in the film. The series begins October 8, ending October 29, on Thursdays from 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM for 4 sessions. For $75 you will explore four films that dramatize/cover key moments in American History and feature some of film’s greatest directors and actors. The movies/directors covered in this series include: Giant directed by George Stevens, which explores the growth of Big Oil and contentious Anglo-Mexican relations in Texas in this Academy Award winning film starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean; We Were Young and… Soldiers Once directed by Randall Wallace, and based on the most realistic and comprehensive book about the Vietnam War, this film tells both sides of the battle for the Ia Drang Valley, the first major confrontation between the US and North Vietnamese Armies in November 1965; Across the Universe directed by innovative director Julie Taymore (The Lion King on Broadway), who reconstructs the social and political history of the 1960’s using the music of the Beatles in the “tour de force” of dramatic narrative supported by the stunning use of music, dance and film technique; and “W” directed by Oliver Stone who in his most disciplined and mature film to date, presents a surprisingly sympathetic portrayal of the failed presidency of George W. Bush. Starring are Josh Broline as “W”, Elizabeth Banks as Laura Bush, James Cromwell as Bush Senior and Richard Dreyfus as Dick Cheney.
