The Gila National Forest is the largest national forest in the U.S.outside Alaska, with more than 3.3 million acres. Elevation ranges from 4,000 to 11,000 feet. The 550,000 + acre Gila Wilderness is part of the Forest, located 3 miles east of Glenwood and 25 miles north of Silver City. It was the world's first designated wilderness area, created in 1924. Aldo Leopold Wilderness occupies 200,000 + acres of the Forest. It is named for conservation pioneer Aldo Leopold, who helped create the adjacent Gila Wilderness. Blue Range Wilderness is across the New Mexico border from Arizona's Blue Range Primitive Area and is part of New Mexico's Gila National Forest. The Mogollón Rim crosses this area. Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument is north of the town of Silver City. The dwellings were constructed in the cliff face by the Mogollón Indians around 1300. The Catwalk of Whitewater Canyon is a 250-foot metal causeway on the site of the ghost town of Graham.

Wildlife abound in the Gila, including Rocky Mountain mule deer, Sonoran whitetail deer, Antelope, black bear, Javelina, Rocky Mountain elk, bighorn sheep, mountain lion, bobcats, ringtails, coatis, and more than 200 species of birds, including Bald and Golden Eagles, turkey, goshawks, and Mexican spotted owls. The Gila has almost 500 miles of fishing streams. Species include flathead and channel catfish, bass, Rio Grande cutthroat trout, endangered Gila trout (protected), wild brown and stocked rainbow trout. Catron County (6,898 square miles) is larger than the state of Connecticut (5,544 square miles), or of Rhode Island (1,545 square miles) and Delaware (1,982 square miles) together. And the population is about 3,500.
