My name is Mary and I am looking for any type of help that I can possibly get. I live out in Pie Town and due to an illness I have been staying here in Albuquerque for several years now with my son to be closer to my doctors. My son was diagnosed with cancer and suddenly died in July after being told he was going to make it. The tragedy of his death has taken a toll on me and I find myself in a horrible situation in which I don’t know where to turn. I can only stay in his house until the first of October 2008 and then I have to either have the financial means to put the trailer in my name and pay for the land rent or go back to Pie Town. I truly don’t want to give up the trailer because I feel him all around me when I am here and this is the only thing I have left of my sons. I feel close to him here and I am scared to think of not having him around me any longer. I can’t afford the payment for the land rent and the trailer. I know I am going to have to go back to Pie Town and just travel back and forth from the doctors a few times a week. I am ready to deal with that. Although, I am not ready to deal with loosing my son and the only thing left of him. If there is anyone or any organization out there that would be able to help me figure out a way for me to keep the trailer and move it out to Pie Town please call me as soon as possible as time is running short for me. Volunteer your time and expertise helping to establish cottage industries, or to develop environmentally responsible sustainable farming practices.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a national mentoring organization that matches children ages 6-15 in a one-on-one relationship with caring adult volunteers in the community. The children matched, or the "Littles," are kids in need of a positive role model in their lives.

For as little as one hour per week, you can make a big difference in the life of a child. Right now in Albuquerque there are approximately 200 children on the waiting list for a mentor. Most of these are little boys, meaning we are in desperate need of male volunteers. You can choose a site-based program where you meet with your little once a week for an hour in his/her school, or you can choose the community-based program where you and your little do fun things in the community. Matches go to baseball games, take hikes, bake cookies or just sit and talk with each other.

Whatever you choose, there is a program that can fit your schedule. Please visit www.bbbs-cnm.org today to fill out the easy online application and learn more about making a big difference for someone little.

Leading Writing for Wellness classes for cancer survivors

Julie Davey, who is a two-time breast cancer survivor, started Writing for Wellness classes to give something back to the community that helped her heal (City of Hope in Los Angeles). Because it has been so helpful, we are expanding the program to other areas of the country.

Writing for Wellness classes show people who have had cancer or other serious physical problems how to write about their journey of recovery. More than just journaling, the designated topic for each class helps the participants focus on a specific aspect of their situation. Classes deal with anger and sorrow, but they also deal with friendships and laughter, hope and giving back to others.

We’re looking for volunteers to start Writing for Wellness classes. Ideally you would be able to commit to a two-year program of running classes that help people who are recovering from cancer or other medical conditions.

If the two-year commitment is too much, we still would appreciate it if you would join us to hear Julie Davey discuss teaching the classes. Even leading one set of sessions (once a week for five weeks) will help. You can get class information from Dawn Craft at Dawn@IdyllArbor.com or 360-825-7797.

For more information, please see the website www.WritingForWellness.net or contact Dawn Craft at Dawn@IdyllArbor.com.

Because scams are such a big part of Internet life, we’d like to make this clear: No purchases are required. No payments are required. There is a book about Writing for Wellness, but you are not required to purchase a copy to lead the classes. Students in the classes are not required to purchase the book either. We hope you will decide to buy a book to help us continue our efforts, but the important thing is to spread the concept of Writing for Wellness.

Thank you for your help,

We have an incredibly successful program working with very young children and their families to help them become rehoused after a period of homelessness—but we need more helping hands. Once you visit with the children you'll want to help them thrive. Contact Katie Sonnen at 843-6899 or katies@clnkids.org to find out how you can help!

Cuidando Los Niños has several opportunities for volunteers:

** Classroom Volunteers -- Loving arms are needed to hold, rock, play with, and read to these wonderful children. From age 16-160, we'll welcome you with open arms. Volunteers are welcome from 8am-12pm and 2pm-5pm in the classrooms. Those wishing to volunteer during the children's naptime are welcome to help in the office, sorting donations, or other needs.

** Office Support Volunteers -- Cuidando Los Niños needs a few volunteers to help with paperwork and data-entry. Whether you are a computer pro already or just willing to learn, you can help! We will give you all the training you need on our computer and filing system. A regular commitment of 1-6 hours a week is ideal.

** Parent Night Volunteers -- We hold Parent Night at Cuidando los Ninos the 2nd and 4th Thursday evenings of the month, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eight (8) volunteers are needed to assist with childcare in the nursery and preschool; four (4) volunteers to prepare, serve and clean up after the meal (approximately 80 children and adults are served); and four (4) volunteers to supervise recreation for school-aged children from 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Appropriate for volunteers age 16 and older.

** Donation Sorting Volunteers -- CLN receives a lot of donations of used clothes, toys, household items, and more. We need a volunteer who is available every Thursday to sort the new donations and organize them for display or storage. Thursday afternoons our families come to look through the donations and take what they need for their children and their homes. Volunteers must be able to commit 2-3 hours on Thursday morning or early afternoon each week and be able to lift 30 pounds."

** Kitchen Volunteers -- Help our cook prepare a nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snack for our wonderful children. Volunteers are welcome 8am-2pm Monday through Friday.

The mission of Cuidando Los Niños (CLN) is to provide high quality childcare and therapeutic services to meet the special needs of children experiencing homelessness and support services that assist and strengthen their families as they become re-housed. Well, our new book is out [http://www.chestnuthillinstitute.com/books/affairs/], with some amazing endorsements, and I say it is "our" book because I couldn't have done it without you. It's WHEN GOOD PEOPLE HAVE AFFAIRS: INSIDE THE HEARTS AND MINDS OF PEOPLE IN TWO RELATIONSHIPS, and it has all the help you could need if you or your partner or anyone you care about has been having an affair. To do this book I needed your input: your thoughts and experiences, everything you wanted other people to know about what you'd been through. And you came through like champs. And I especially want to thank everyone who came up with a title or subtitle that we used. Your ideas were great!

BTW: I'm not the only one to thank you. Everyone who has been and will be helped by this book will thank you too.

Boy and Autism Service Dog need your help (Any Location Any Location)

Hi,

I have a wonderful eight year old who has autism. He has been approved and we have made payments towards his service dog, Rex.

Rex is a beautiful yellow lab.

Rex will be trained to always be with Cole, to search for him by scent if Cole ever wanders off, to provide Cole with tactile touch by purposely leaning on him when asked. Rex will also sleep with Cole and is being trained to sleep against him to hopefully help keep Cole in bed. There are also many other things specific to Cole's needs.

Unfortunately we are still needing approximately $2000.00 towards his cost.
We have already raised $3000.00.

Due to my loss of job, we have been trying to raise funds but are left with this and our final payment is due soon.

Anyone who donates will receive a picture of our son and Rex when he arrives. You will also receive a hand drawn (priceless!) picture from our son thanking you if you give us your address.

Donations can be mailed directly to the service animal agency and if you email me I will give you all of that information and answer any questions you may have.

We firmly believe in paying it forward and when we are back on our feet will do so.

Donations can be mailed to:
Ambassador Assistance Animals International C/of Service Dog Rex/Cole H. 3202 Broadway Glenburn, ME 04401 (He is being flown in from Maine)

Any donations/help would be greatly appreciated.

This is your chance to help change a life and make a difference!

Volunteers for 2008 Maize Maze (ABQ - Rio Grande Community Farm)

Volunteer Maize Maze Positions 2008

Volunteers needed for Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays from August 30 - Nov. 2
Contact us for more detailed shift schedules. Volunteer participation will entitle you to free admission to the Maze and a free t-shirt! Plus, you'll feel good about yourself!

Here is what we need:

Parking Area Greeters (2/shift): Primarily greet and welcome maze-goers at the parking area, providing Maze information and answering any questions. (Note-this position is not acting as security, although the presence of people at the parking area may aid as a deterrent toward theft or other crimes or vandalism. Any crime situation should be reported to police authorities immediately).

Cashiers (2-3/shift): Primary responsibilities are to greet and provide maze-goers customer service in selling entrance tickets, T-shirts and other items for sale and provide information. Persons will maintain an organized and tidy work area and be attentive to customer needs. Good communication and customer service skills are essential, in addition to basic cashiering skills.

Maze Attendants (2/shift): Primary responsibilities are to greet maze-goers and provide information and guidelines (instruction) on safety concerns and what you can and can’t do inside the maze (i.e. stay on the pathways, no smoking, no picking corn etc…). Attendants will also aid maze-goers if they become lost, disoriented or other when it is obvious that someone needs assistance. Attendants generally remain at the entrance to the maze. Opening attendants should do a quick sweep of the maze to retrieve any trash or note any safety concerns or other issues (i.e. information posts pulled out).

Flyer Distribution: Specific locations will be identified for volunteers to drop/deliver, primarily, our rack card brochure though other media items may be included. Specific dates and times of distribution will be set by the Maze committee. This should start in August and continue through October. Primary responsibilities are to distribute Maze promotional materials to the listed venues supplied by RGCF, provide cordial communication with venue personnel asking permission to leave materials etc... Own transportation is needed.

Wagon Shuttle Driver (1): Ideally, a volunteer (staff/board) member. Drives tractor wagon as a shuttle between the main gate, Gazebo and maze entrance. Safety is primary responsibility! A set departure and return schedule will be set and adhered to. This position is not necessarily maintained during all Maze operating hours.

Haunters (5-10 people for Oct. 31 & Nov. 1): Maze Haunters will be "haunting" the Maze and interacting with people and groups of all ages in a spooky, Halloween-themed Maze. Costume/ Black clothing required, as well as some acting skills and sensitivity to the "haunted" participants.

If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities, please reply via email or call 505-999-1258. Thanks
