100-plus year-old Mennonite-form Shuck bed--could be from Mennonite communities in the Ohio/Pennsylvania area or possibly the small Mennonite community in Mexico--south of El Paso. This is an old German form brought to America by Mennonite/Amish settlers in the 19th century. It is a combination settee and bed. There is a huge drawer under the seat--the seat hinges up to a vertical position exposing the open area beneath which slides out like a drawer and thus makes a bed. Typically there was a mattress bag filled with corn husks which was spread out and slept on--usually for the kids but adults used them too where the quarters were cramped. This one is special in that it is painted with faux-graining to immitate hard woods (these things were virtually always made of pine)...The graining in this piece is complex and in excellent condition compared to what you usually see. In fact most were just painted with red milk-paint--so this would have been considered quite fancy in its day. The paint can easily be restored to original if you're not a purist. Back East these can easily bring $2500. We're not Back East so $1200 is a bargain.--AND IT'S $950 BECAUSE it needs to go--& offers will be seriously considered. PHONE CALLS ONLY!!! NO TEXTS (NOTHING PERSONAL!--IT'S JUST THAT'S THE WAY SCAMMERS WORK THESE DAYS). We can deliver. Can be seen in Albuquerque.
