Meaning of the picture on rug:
This is a hieroglyphic scene from the tomb of Queen Nefertari. She is led by the Goddess Isis (on the right). Isis is gently holding the hand of Queen Nefertari guiding her on her journey into the eternal afterlife. Nefertari, the Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Ramases II, was celebrated for her beauty and influence, and her tomb is the most stunningly preserved in Egypt. Nefertari lived during the early 19th Dynasty (1213 – 1279 B.C.), which followed Akhenaten’s reign. Nefertari means “beloved companion”. She is one of the best-known Egyptians Queens. Upon her death King Ramases II honored her with one of the most beautiful tombs in Egyptian history and a temple next to his colossal monument in Abu Simbel. Isis was a major Goddess in ancient Egyptian religion whose worship spread throughout the Greco-Roman world. Isis was known for her magical powers. She was a member of the pantheon of 9 Egyptian gods of the old kingdom and has always been linked to fertility, magic and protection of travelers.
Nefertari was known as the favorite wife of Pharaoh Rameses II, a highly educated and influential Queen who participated in diplomatic efforts. She was renowned for her beauty and wisdom, wielding significant influence in religious and political life.
Nefertari’s tomb was discovered in 1904 in the Valley of the Queens, and it remains one of the largest and most richly decorated in Egypt, often called “Sistine Chapel of Ancient Egypt”. This scene on this rug depicts her journey into the afterlife.
