Old Town' Discovery 174, fully refurbished 2003 model. Thwart and yoke refinished with multiple coats of tung oil, all hardware replaced with new stainless steel. Molded outfitter seats (no maintenance). Vinyl gunwales in very good condition, hull constructed with Old Town's virtually indestructible PolyLink 3 material.

The low price is due to a small Kevlar cloth and epoxy repair just below the starboard gunwale, and to a hairline fracture on the inside bottom of the hull that will be repaired with epoxy prior to delivery. (See last photo - It's been left as is for now to allow potential owners to inspect prior to making the repair). Neither of these flaws affect the performance of the canoe.

Dimensions: 17' 4” long, 36” wide. Weight 85 lbs. Carrying capacity 1500 lbs.

Design Characteristics:

Symmetrical, shallow arch, minimal rocker, flared bow and stern

Flared bow and stern shed waves, while the shallow arch hull delivers high secondary stability (highly resistant to capsize). Symmetrical hull design allows solo paddling from the bow seat while facing the stern Minimal rocker leads to efficient use of each paddle stroke and great glide and speed, in exchange for a little more effort to turn. An excellent all-around design for lakes and Class I/II rivers.

Old Town rebranded the Discovery 174 as the Penobscot 174 over a decade ago, which now retails for $1649.00 new. See this link:
